Modern information and communication technologies
play a fundamental role in the activities of an organisation
like Prescription Pricing Division. We are based in England.
The PPD undertakes a wide number of functions on behalf
of the Secretary of State for Health. These include the:-
- examination, checking, investigation
and pricing of prescriptions for drugs, medicines
and listed appliances: supplied as pharmaceutical
services under the NHS Act 1977 (as amended).
- calculation of reimbursements due
to dispensing contractors in the primary care sector
and payments to pharmacy contractors, including notification
to HAs of amounts paid for budgetary purposes.
- prompt and regular provision of
information analysing costs and prescribing trends
of general practitioners, together with analysis of
the number and cost of prescriptions.
- compilation, publication and distribution
on a monthly basis of the Drug Tariff in a manner
approved by the Secretary of State of Health.
- administration on behalf of the
Secretary of State for Health of the NHS Low Income
Scheme in accordance with the provisions of the NHS
(Travelling Expenses and Remission of Charges) Regulations
2003 (as amended).
- investigation in the primary prescribing
sector, of irregularities by patients and contractors,
including the promotion of irregularities awareness
and prevention.
The PPD maintains the largest drug database of its kind in
Europe, over 576 million prescriptions per year. In addition,
