PPD Support Services
A number of organisations receive electronic information
from the NHSBSA PPD in order to carry out specific business
functions. The main customers of the NHSBSA PPD and
the type of information they receive are as follows:
3MSPSL Document Services
3MSPSL have responsibility for the printing and distribution
of prescription pads to PCTs Trusts and other agencies.
The
NHSBSA PPD supplies prescriber and organisational information
to 3MPSPL for personalisation of printed prescriptions.
This information needs to be as up to date as possible
and the NHSBSA PPD relies on timely notification of
new/amended data from prescriber organisations. The
following details are sent to 3MSPSL on a daily basis:
- GP
- Nurse
- Supplementary
Prescribers (since August 2003)
- Hospital
Trusts.
- Private
Controlled Drug (CD) Prescribers (Since February 2006)
NHS Connecting for Health - NACS (National Administrative Codes Service)
The NACS is a service provided by NHS Connecting for
Health. It is responsible for National policy and standards
for organisation codes, which form part of the NHS data
standards.
The
NHSBSA PPD supplies information on GPs and their practices
for England, Wales, Jersey, Guernsey/Alderney and Isle
of Man to the NACS on a weekly, monthly and quarterly
basis. The PPD also supplies English contractor information
to the NACS on a weekly basis. From March 2006 onwards,
the PPD also supplies information on Private CD Prescribers
on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. The NACS publishes
this information along with other NHS organisations
and codes on their web site and in CD-ROM format for
users in the NHS.
PSNC - Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee
The PSNC is financed by Local Pharmaceutical Committees
and its main objective is to secure the remuneration,
terms and conditions for NHS pharmacy contractors in
England and Wales.
The
NHSBSA PPD supplies PSNC with contractor payment details
and drug information as appropriate.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Information on prescriptions written in either Scotland
or Wales but dispensed in England (known as 'leaked
data'), is passed to Health Solutions Wales, or NHS
in Scotland (Practitioner Services) as appropriate.
The NHSBSA PPD also supplies files on drugs, appliances,
manufacturers, the British National Formulary (BNF),
English GPs and English hospitals to Scotland and Wales.
Wales also receive English practice, nurse, PCT and
contractor details. The NHSBSA PPD supplies a drug file
to Northern Ireland.
nhs.uk
nhs.uk is a vehicle to present standardised information
about organisations, which can be searched in a consistent
manner by the public, patients, and NHS staff.
The
NHSBSA PPD provides weekly updates for the names, addresses,
and telephone numbers of pharmacy contractors.
DSRU - Drug Safety and Research Unit
The NHSBSA PPD supplies information on prescriptions
for drugs that are being monitored under Prescription
Event Monitoring (PEM) to the DSRU. The information
supplied by the PPD includes:
- Patient
name, address and gender
- GP
name and practice address
- Drug
name and quantity prescribed.
Research Organisations Support
The NHS Business Services Authority (Prescription Pricing
Division) (NHSBSA PPD) maintains the largest drug database
of its kind in Europe, over 678 million prescription
items per year.
The
NHSBSA PPD provides information to legitimate research
organisations when specific criteria are met.
