Resources
(last updated 31/01/06)

The Authority's resource limits for 2005/06 are £80.158m for revenue and £6.03m for capital expenditure. 66% of the revenue allocation will be spent on costs relating to staff, 28% used for a variety of purposes including rent, computer maintenance and energy and the remaining 6% on capital financing charges.

The net book value of fixed assets owned by the Authority is just over £19m, a large proportion of which relates to the substantial investment in IT equipment, including several mainframe computers, and numerous file servers, PCs and terminals.

The Authority's estate portfolio comprises of 14 properties, 12 devoted to office accommodation and 2 for warehousing and storage. In total, the Authority occupies over 350,000 square feet of accommodation in 9 towns and cities in the North of England and West Midlands. Four properties, including the headquarters are based in the Newcastle area.

The Authority employs more than 2750 people in total, 75% of whom are directly involved in the calculation of contractor payments. Almost two hundred staff are engaged in the calculation of entitlements under the NHS Low Income Scheme and the sale of Prescription Prepayment Certificates and the issue of Health related Tax Credit Certificates. A sizeable proportion of the remainder are employed to support the information services within the IT Department.

The Authority is responsible for actual payments to pharmacy contractors. In addition to its own resource limit further sums will be disbursed by the Authority in the order of £7.5 billion in a financial year 2005/06. This means that the authority handles, by a considerable margin, the largest amount of cash by a single NHS organisation.
