Help With Health Costs Via Tax Credits

If you receive Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, you (and your family) may be entitled to help with NHS health costs.

If you are entitled to help with health costs via tax credits, the NHS Business Services Authority on behalf of the Health Departments in the UK will automatically send you a NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate. An example of the credit card style certificate is shown on the right. Click here to check if you are entitled to help with health costs via tax credits.

If you receive a tax credit, but are not automatically entitled to help with health costs, you will not receive a NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate, and should consider the alternative methods of getting help with health costs. A full list of the ways in which you may be able to get help is available. If you are resident in:

  • England, click here
  • Scotland, click here
  • Wales, click here

If you are unsure as to whether you are entitled to help with health costs via tax credits, contact the HM Revenue and Customs on the following number:
Great Britain 0845 300 3900
Northern Ireland 0845 603 2000
Or, check the HM Revenue and Customs website at www.hmrc.gov.uk.

What the NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate Covers

The certificate entitles you, your partner (if you have one) and any children to:

  • free NHS prescriptions
  • free NHS dental treatment
  • free NHS sight tests
  • the full value of a voucher towards the cost of glasses and contact lenses
  • free NHS wigs and fabric supports
  • refund of necessary costs of travel to and from hospital for NHS treatment.
You will need to show your NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate each time you get an NHS prescription or other health service. If you have children aged under 16 or 16,17 or 18 and they are in full-time education, they are already entitled to free NHS treatment, Sight Tests, NHS Prescriptions and Vouchers towards the cost of glasses . They may need to show evidence that they are in full-time education when they go for treatment.
