The Practice Detailed Prescribing Information report (PDPI) shows prescribing amounts and costs broken down according to the BNF, for each prescriber in a practice. This includes prescribing by GPs, practice nurses, Trainee/GP Registrars, Locums, Deputising Services and other independent or supplementary prescribers (e.g. pharmacists, optometrists, podiatrists, etc) employed by or contracted to the practice.

Because of the huge range of possible data combinations in this report, reports are not retained, instead a new one is created online each time you use it. A data selector has been provided that lets you choose such parameters as prescribers, periods and BNF details to allow greater focus on particular areas, and to produce a report tailored to your needs.

After selecting your options, the report is created and displayed in your web browser.

Data Selector

The Data Selector allows you to choose the content of your report.

The options available in the data selector are:

  • Select Period
A listbox containing up to 24 months that prescribing data is available for. A new entry will appear here each month as new data becomes available while the oldest month will be removed. To select more than one period, hold CTRL while selecting each desired period. This will create a report with data summed for the selected periods.

  • Prescriber

The report can either be at practice level (includes prescribing by PCT employed prescribers prescribing on behalf of the practice), or at prescriber level.

The practice name is at the top of the listbox and this should be chosen for reports showing the total prescribing for the practice.

The 'All Practice Prescribers' option totals each prescriber in the practice individually.

The individual practice prescribers (including any practice nurses and other practice prescribers such as pharmacists) allow a report to be generated for an individual prescriber.

  • BNF Chapter

The BNF chapter that the report is the subject of. Additionally, an 'All chapters' option is available to report all prescribing.

  • Level

This option allows you to choose how much detail is displayed on the report. For example, choosing Chapter level shows figures totalled to BNF Chapter level, while Section level shows figures totalled to BNF Section level, etc…

The "Total BNF" option ignores any particular level and totals up all elements of the chosen BNF Chapters.

  • Prescribing Type

This option can restrict the PDPI report to only contain prescribing by Trainees/GP registrars or Locum/Deputising Services.

Of these options, only Total is available when used in combination with a Summary report (see Catalogue Type option).

  • Prescribing or Dispensing

PDPI data is available with either the prescribing or dispensing catalogues

The prescribing catalogue option contains details of prescriptions attributed to the subject.

The dispensing catalogue option includes details of prescriptions attributed to the subject which were also dispensed by the subject or within the subject's practice dispensary if the subject is a GP.

  • Catalogue Type

These two formats provide different levels of detail.

The Full Detailed catalogue contains details of Actual Cost, Net Ingredient Cost (NIC), and Number of Items for the selected period and prescriber or practice.

The Summary catalogue report contains NIC, Number of Items and a percentage comparison for each with the same period for the previous year and with the PCT equivalent for the selected prescriber or practice.

The PCT equivalent figures are based on the actual prescribing figures for the local PCT adjusted to create an imaginary practice with the same list size as your practice.

  • Ordering

The report can be ordered in two ways. Ordering by BNF gives a report that is totalled per BNF level that was selected, while order by prescriber gives a report that is totalled for each prescriber.

Requesting an imaginary report that involved 2 GPs and 3 BNF Sections would be structured like this:

    With Prescriber ordering:

    • GP1
      • BNF section 1
      • BNF section 2
      • BNF section 3
    • GP1 Total
    • GP2
      • BNF section 1
      • BNF section 2
      • BNF section 3
    • GP2 Total

    With BNF ordering:

    • BNF section 1
      • GP1
      • GP2
    • BNF section 1 Total
    • BNF section 2
      • GP1
      • GP2
    • BNF section 2 Total
    • BNF section 3
      • GP1
      • GP2
    • BNF section 3 Total
  • Submit & Exit Buttons

After making your selections, click on the Submit to display the report. This process could take 10-20 seconds; there is no need to click on Submit again.

The Exit button will close the Data Selector and return to the ePFIP page.

    Header Information

A header appears on every page in the PDPI report, the exact format is dependent on the selections made in the data selector. The reporting period is displayed, this may be a range of periods if more than one has been selected. The BNF level is always displayed together with either the prescriber or practice (when ordered by prescriber) or the BNF code (when ordered by BNF). Whether the report refers to a catalogue of prescribing or dispensing is also indicated in the header of each page.

If a report is chosen that contains information on more than one prescriber (prescriber ordering) or BNF code (BNF ordering), then each will be started on a new page.

    Report Content

Each page in the PDPI report refers either to one prescriber (prescriber ordering) with BNF codes listed, or one BNF code (BNF ordering) with prescribers listed.

If viewing with prescriber ordering and at presentation level or above (above presentation level on summary catalogue reports), it is possible to drilldown to lower levels of the BNF by clicking on the hyperlinks. In the screenshot above, the report is being viewed at section level. By clicking on a section, it would be possible to see more detailed information about that section by viewing the detail at paragraph level.

Note: The drug classification used by the PPD is based on the BNF. However there are minor differences and extensions. They are explained in more detail here. In particular the PPD uses additional pseudo BNF chapters 18-23 to classify:
Preparations used in Diagnosis, Other Drugs and Preparations, Dressings and Appliances. These chapters are structured into sections, paragraphs, etc in the same way as the standard BNF chapters. However some of these levels have not been given descriptions and will appear in PDPI reports as, for example, "Unnamed paragraph" together with the BNF code.

For each entry with either type of ordering, the following information is given:

    • Items (Full detailed and summary catalogues)
Number of prescribed items. A prescription item refers to a single item prescribed on a prescription form.

    • NIC (Net Ingredient Cost) (£) (Full detailed and summary catalogues)
The basic price of a drug, i.e. the price listed in the Drug Tariff. The NIC of any prescribed item is the same whoever the prescriber may be.

    • Actual Cost (£) (Full detailed catalogue only)
Actual Cost in this report is the basic price less the national average discount amount calculated plus the container cost.

    • Quantity (only appears when viewing at Presentation by Quantity level. Full detailed catalogue only)
Normally the quantity prescribed. However, where a preparation is packed in a 'special container' the pharmacist is not required to split the pack and may supply the number of containers or original packs which provide the quantity nearest to that prescribed. Included in this category are preparations which are:

      • sterile
      • effervescent or hygroscopic
      • liquid preparations for addition to bath water
      • coal tar preparations
      • viscous external preparations
      • preparations packed in a collapsible tube, pressurised aerosol, spray, puffer pack, squeeze pack, castor, shaker, roll-on bottle, drop bottle, container with an integral means of application, or any other container from which it is not practicable to dispense the exact quantity ordered
      • reconstituted from granules or powder, resulting in a liquid of limited stability.

    • Quantity*Items (only appears when viewing at Presentation by Quantity level. Full detailed catalogue only)
Quantity multiplied by number of prescribed items.

    • Percentage compared with last year (summary catalogue report only)
Change in NIC or items compared with previous period. If more then one period has been selected then the change of the summed NIC or items is displayed. If more than 12 periods are selected these columns are displayed as 0.

    • Percentage compared with PCT (summary catalogue report only)
The figures for percentage variance between the subject and their equivalent are printed as zero if there are no list size details available for the report subject. If more than 12 periods are selected these columns are displayed as 0.

    • At presentation and presentation by quantity level, some drugs have indicators in bold following their names. A key to abbreviations used:

      • BS: borderline substance
      • CD: controlled drug
      • GFA: generic form available
      • N: new drug
      • V: CSM monitored drug
      • B: bulk prescribed
      • D: dilution
      • P: personally administered
