Please can you tell me the guidance given to general practitioners regarding the amount of a drug that they may prescribe on one prescription. For example, can they choose to prescribe 25 paracetamol or 100 paracetamol on one prescription? Can they prescribe one months supply of a drug or two months supply on one prescription? Is the amouth they can prescribe governed by statute, by guidence from any authority eg Department of Health, Health Authority etc. or is it up to the inndividual general practitioner? Many thanks

Under the act I have a duty to advise and assist you and with regard to that duty as far as I am aware, the responsibility to determine the product and quantity prescribed on a prescription form rests solely with the prescriber. Some Primary Care Trusts may, however, suggest that medicines etc. are supplied for a standard period (e.g. one month's supply) but this is not held in statute and is not, therefore, binding. |
