The Specialist Drug Report is produced at National, HA, PCG and practice level to show the expenditure within the organisation unit, of particular identified drugs.

The report is produced automatically in July to cover the previous financial year and in November to cover the previous calendar year.

The National report is produced for England. Health Authority reports are produced for all of the Health Authorities in England. PCG reports are produced for all the Primary Care Groups in England. Practice level reports are produced for all practices within all English HA's.

The current list of presentations to be included in the analysis are detailed in Specialist Drugs current list of presentations and in Specialist Drugs List of Presentations prior to 1st April 1998. The original list of specialist drugs used for the interim reports was produced by the FEPACT User Group and will be updated by Clive Jackson of the National Prescribing Centre, Peter Clappison of the NHS Executive and Sue Fawding and Dave Roberts of the Prescribing Support Unit and supplied to the PPA each year.

All national, HA, PCG and practice reports contain the following data:

• a header, indicating the organisational unit, and the reporting period
• each detail line contains:
  • the presentation description
  • number of times the presentation was prescribed within the reporting period
  • quantity prescribed within the reporting period
  • total cost of prescribing in the reporting period (quantity * basic price)
• be sorted by BNF code
• only report on drugs from the specialist drugs list which have prescribing attributed to them (as for the PACT catalogue)
• prescribing is included at the lowest level to which it can be ascribed.
