Nurse Prescribing Information for a PCT
"Information relating to prescribing by nurses is available from a number of the PPA's information systems."
Information relating to nurse prescribing within a Primary Care Trust (PCT) is available from the following systems to authorised users:
- ePACT.net
- Prescribing Toolkit
- PACT
- PMD
ePACT.net for PCTs covers 36 months of prescribing data. It includes prescribing information for nurses (working in a practice and a community environment) in the practice figures.
From October 2002 dispensed data, the PCT will continue to have access to nurse prescribing totals at all BNF levels. In addition, the totals will be available split by nurse prescribing formulary and the environment in which the nurse works, i.e. community or practice.
ePACT.net nurse service
PCTs will continue to have access to individual nurse data for those nurses they directly employ who are prescribing for patients:
- registered with the practices for which the PCT is responsible
- through a CNPC that the PCT is providing to another NHS primary care organisation.
The facility is available to identify the practices on whose behalf a nurse has prescribed.
From October 2002 dispensed data, two new system generated tags will allow nurse data to be grouped by either:
- District Nurse and Health Visitor Formulary Nurses
- Extended Formulary nurses
Prescribing Toolkit covers three years of data and includes:
- prescribing by nurses (working in a practice and community environment) in the practice figures.
- pre-defined Nurse Prescribing Comparators, that provide information on the cost of prescribing from the Nurse Prescribing Formularies by nurses and GPs.
From October 2002 dispensed data. three new nurse indicators will be available based on the Nurse Prescribers' Extended Formulary.
The PACT Standard Report is produced automatically each quarter and is available monthly on request at the following levels:
Prescribing by nurses working within a practice and nurses directly employed by the PCT are included in the totals. The back page of the report shows separate nurse prescribing totals split by:
- District Nurse and Health Visitor Formulary nurses
- Extended Formulary nurses.
The PACT Catalogue is available, on request, covering any consecutive period of between one and twenty-four months for:
- an individual nurse working within a practice.
- all nurses prescribing on behalf of a practice (i.e. includes nurses directly employed by the PCT).
- all nurses who are employed by the PCT.
- an individual nurse who is employed by the PCT and prescribing on behalf of the PCT.
- all nurses prescribing within a (CNPC) that the PCT has commissioned.
- prescribing by a specific nurse within a CNPC that the PCT has commissioned.
From October 2002 dispensed data, a nurse PACT catalogue will identify the formulary from which the nurse is qualified to prescribe, e.g. Mrs. N. Smith (NPEF).
The PMD Community Nurse Prescribing Contract (CNPC) Statement provides financial information about prescribing costs against budgets. This report is issued automatically each month to a PCT that has commissioned a CNPC. This is accompanied by a CNPC Practice Summary sheet that shows details for all practices that have nurse prescribing attributed to them under that contract.
On request from a PCT, the PPA will provide a Practice Identification Report which lists all practices within a PCT showing practice code, address and telephone number. This information is required to enable a nurses working in a community environment to complete the correct patient practice code on prescriptions so that the cost of the prescribing can be correctly attributed.
