The system of therapeutic classification used throughout the PACT reports is the PPA BNF code, which is designed to reflect the current structure of the British National Formulary (BNF), for example, a drug appearing in chapter 1, section 3, paragraph 1 (H2-receptor antagonists) would be allocated the BNF classification 01.03.01. Drugs and preparations are classified according to the BNF version in use by the PPA, which is updated annually, up to and including, the version issued in the previous September.
If, exceptionally, a preparation occurs in the BNF under the same name in more than one section it is normally allocated a PPA BNF code according to its primary indication.
Items not listed in the current BNF are allocated a PPA BNF code based on an appropriate therapeutic classification or, where none exists, a pseudo-therapeutic classification. For this purpose, the BNF classification has been extended to accommodate certain types of product. Dressings are currently included in this category, although some appear in appendix 8 of the BNF.
Preparations used in diagnosis are classified under pseudo-BNF chapter 18. Other drugs and preparations are classified under pseudo-BNF chapter 19, which also contains a section for exceptional items that are found to be unclassifiable. Dressings, appliances, incontinence items and stoma items are classified under the pseudo-BNF chapters 20 – 23 respectively.
